Brussels, 29 September 2025 – Twenty successful art and science projects from across Europe have been announced today by TIDAL ArtS. The Lighthouse Projects will engage communities across Europe in creative endeavours to protect and restore our marine and freshwater ecosystems.
The Lighthouse Artist Calls received over 600 applications in what has been described as a “competitive and compelling” response.
Sarah Tamulski, TIDAL ArtS Project Manager congratulated the winning applications, saying they were overwhelmed by the response to the call, which demonstrates the relevance of connecting art and science for the restoration of our marine environment..
“This Horizon EU project will provide €300,000 in funding to support 20 artists and collectives, with the central aim of uniting art and science to advance the European Commission’s goal of restoring the health of our ocean and waters by 2030.
“All of the unique artistic endeavours which will be created will engage members of the public in marine science and remind them of their unique role in ocean conservation. We feel strongly that art and science combined can make an impact beyond the life of this project.”
Lighthouse Artists
The Lighthouse Artists take their name from the four strategic regions identified by the European Commission’s Mission Ocean, which supports regional engagement and cooperation through area-based ‘Lighthouses’ in the Atlantic-Arctic, Mediterranean, Baltic-North Sea, and Danube-Black Sea basins.
The Lighthouse Artist projects representing all four regions are:
Atlantic-Arctic
- Voyage – Catherine Baxendale, Sápmi & UK
- The Rising Prophecy – Anita Brokmeier, UK
- Seaweed Stories – Maeve Stone, Ireland
- From the Mouths of the Caves – Listening to Hear Another Island’s Song – Mhairi Killin, UK

Baltic-North Sea
- The Sea Begins Here – Agne Marcinkeviciute, Lithuania
- Oyster Matter – Henning Monsieur, Netherlands
- Hotel Kittiwake+ – Ed Compson, UK
- Echoes of the Deep – Kassandra Huynh, Germany
- Baltic Code of Signals – Isabella Martin, Denmark
Danube River-Black Sea
- Neural Bloom – Floriama Candea, Romania
- A Light in the Black – Lia Komakhidze, Georgia
- Floodforest – Zsófia Szonja Illés, Hungary
- Eat That Invasion – Pepa Ivanova, Bulgaria
- Bitter Salt Flow – Emőke Kerekes, Romania
Mediterranean Sea
