DESCRIPTION

“Echoes of the Deep” is an immersive multimedia exhibition inviting audiences to explore speculative futures of the Baltic Sea—one of the world’s most critically impacted marine environments. Polluted by industrial runoff, littered with WWII munitions, choked by excessive nutrients, and strained by overfishing, the Baltic’s ecological health teeters on the edge. Yet much of this damage remains hidden beneath the surface, leaving many locals unaware of its fragile state and its deep interconnections with their daily lives.

Through artistic storytelling, interactive installations, and co-creative engagement, the exhibition fosters community awareness and collective action, encouraging visitors to rethink their relationship with the sea. Bridging science, history, and speculative fiction, “Echoes of the Deep” envisions possible futures, immersing audiences in the Baltic’s urgent environmental challenges while offering pathways toward hope and regeneration.

At the heart of the exhibition is a virtual reality arthouse experience, where visitors don virtual diving goggles and submerge into a near-future Baltic Sea. Participants navigate two parallel realities: one dystopian, where climate inaction accelerates ecosystem collapse, and one hopeful, where environmental initiatives regenerate the sea’s health. This contrast highlights how a resilient ecosystem can thrive with sustained action and innovation—or deteriorate without them. On their diving mission, participants become stewards of the sea, working to secure this hopeful future. As they progress, they encounter strange phenomena and poetic fragments, unraveling mysterious and historical forces hidden beneath the shifting sea. In doing so, they uncover the lasting consequences of war, climate change, and ecological resilience—threading together the past and future through an ecological lens.

Beyond the VR experience, the exhibition features speculative art prints—both as physical works and in a digital booklet—illustrating how the science behind the fiction informs the artwork’s storytelling. These visual pieces blend marine biology, archival research, and speculative design, offering a layered narrative that deepens the immersive experience.

The project is rooted in community collaboration. “Echoes of the Deep” brings together scientists, artists, educators, maritime historians, Baltic migrants, intergenerational families, and local residents in a participatory process that links ocean resilience to collective action. From retired sailors and local historians to young conservationists, diverse voices shape the exhibition’s storytelling. Cultural partners and community anchors like the fund:us theater community ensure accessibility, while integration initiatives foster intercultural dialogue.

It will be showcased through a solo exhibition in Lübeck and at major events Germany/EU-wide including science/art weeks, ocean conservation days, and topic related festivals. The VR experience is intended to eventually be released as a standalone experience, expanding access beyond physical venues. Development begins in autumn 2025, with iterative design, workshops, and impact tracking
continuing through spring 2026. Engagement will extend via exhibitions, digital platforms, and educational partnerships.

“Echoes of the Deep” is not just an exhibition—it’s a call to imagination and action. By engaging audiences emotionally, intellectually, and creatively, it cultivates a sense of belonging and responsibility toward the Baltic Sea. Through immersive storytelling and active participation, the project inspires audiences to reflect, connect, and co-create a meaningful and sustainable marine future together.

GOALS

  • Raise awareness of Baltic Sea degradation Immerse citizens in the hidden ecological crises of the Baltic through interactive storytelling and speculative futures.
  • Bridge science and art for public engagement Partner with local and international NGOs to foster co-creative dialogue between scientists and citizens.
  • Empower visitors as sea stewards Through the VR experience, the audience makes choices that shape the Baltic’s future—highlighting the ripple effect of individual and collective action.
  • Translate research into visual narratives Use speculative art prints to showcase carbon-neutral and circular solutions within the sustainable blue economy.
  • Inspire tangible action aligned with EU Mission objectives Connect local environmental challenges to broader EU and international conservation efforts through biomimicry and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK).
  • Foster community reflection and collaboration Invite visitors to contribute to a growing mural of marine renewal pledges, linking citizen creativity to scientific and policy conversations.
  • Ensure long-term engagement and accessibility Expand beyond academic spaces into intergenerational, immigrant, and entertainment-driven venues to reach diverse audiences.
  • Apply behavioral science for lasting impact Collaborate with behavioral scientists to design participatory formats that drive climate-conscious behavior.
  • Demonstrate real-world conservation outcomes Build on past exhibitions where speculative storytelling led visitors to join environmental NGOs and take action.
  • Scale the conversation globally Continue exhibiting regionally, nationally, and internationally to keep ocean stewardship active and inclusive.
