Project Concept and Inspiration
Seaweed Stories is a creative and environmental project that uses seaweed as both a material and a metaphor to spark new ways of engaging with our coastline. Inspired by the idea of making the “invisible visible,” the project highlights the hidden richness of marine ecosystems and the often-overlooked emotional bonds people hold with the sea. Seaweed becomes our collaborator. As an everyday presence on the shore it transforms into film developer, pigment, memory-holder, and food. The project responds directly to the EU Mission Ocean and the Nature Restoration Law by promoting biodiversity protection, pollution reduction, and climate resilience through culture and community.
Artistic Approach and Methodology
The project combines participatory artmaking with ecological learning. Each event is co-led by an artist and an expert, ensuring that scientific insight and creative interpretation inform one another. A shoreline walk might begin with ecological knowledge, for example how seaweed supports biodiversity, before shifting into creative reflection through drawing, dyeing, or storytelling. This dual lens allows participants to learn by doing, seeing the coastline as a site of learning and imagination. Our methodology emphasises experimentation over perfection, welcoming all skill levels and valuing authenticity above polish.
Materials, Techniques, and Technologies
We work with sustainable, low-impact materials drawn directly from the marine environment. Bladderwrack and other common species are used to develop photographs, dyes are made from invasive Sargassum, and natural pigments are applied in printmaking and textile workshops. Digital technologies extend the project through an online archive, where images, audio stories, and community maps will be shared as a lasting resource.
Target Audience and Community Impact
Seaweed Stories is designed for coastal communities in three towns on the Liscannor Bay, Ennistymon, Liscannor and Miltown Malbay where the project team has long-standing connections. There are brilliant and active community groups that we will collaborate with. Food serves as the bridge: opening events with a community feast and tastings welcomes people who may not usually engage in art or environmental activities. From there, storytelling, craft, and shared walks invite a wide demographic into a curious dialogue with the sea. The impact we aim for is both cultural and ecological: a deeper sense of connection to place, greater awareness of biodiversity, and small but lasting behavior changes in how people interact with their coastal environment.
Timeline and Development Process
The project unfolds across six months. It begins with a feast and introductory walk, followed by a cycle of workshops, adapted to seasonal rhythms of the shore. Each event has an indoor alternative in case of weather disruptions, ensuring continuity. Throughout, we gather reflections and feedback. The digital archive is developed alongside activities, growing as the project progresses.
Expected Outcomes and Results
Seaweed Stories will leave both tangible and intangible legacies. Tangible outcomes include artworks, a digital archive with foraging guide and resources, and a participatory record of the project. Intangible outcomes include emotional connection to place, new creative skills, and shifts in perception, from seeing seaweed as waste to valuing it as wonder.
