The Sea Begins Here, Lithuania

Ranked among the five most polluted seas in the world, the Baltic faces an urgent threat that demands awareness and action. The Sea Begins Here is a cinematic journey, revealing its fragile beauty, the crisis it faces, and the people determined to protect it. We will follow Giedrius Bučas and his team on a 6,000-kilometre hiking trek around the Baltic Sea, documenting both the ecological crisis and the communities, activists, and scientists committed to addressing it. Inspired by this extraordinary journey, the film is both a testament to human resilience and a call to unite in safeguarding the sea. It is a story about courage, collective effort, and the hope that we can preserve the sea for future generations.

Artistically, the documentary combines observational storytelling with intimate personal narratives. We followed the expedition closely, documenting the challenges faced, including the fact that some participants left the mission along the way. The film also incorporates interviews with scientists, activists, and local communities, providing a comprehensive perspective that connects human experiences with environmental issues. At the same time, the documentary visits remote inland areas to explore how farming practices, tourism, and everyday human behaviors affect the Baltic Sea—after all, all rivers eventually flow into it. The methodology emphasizes authenticity and emotional resonance, capturing not only facts and statistics but also the lived experiences of those actively following sustainable practices to minimize their ecological impact.

The Baltic Sea faces multiple scientifically documented threats. Eutrophication, caused by excessive nitrogen and phosphorus from agriculture and urban runoff, fuels harmful algal blooms that deplete oxygen in deeper layers, creating “dead zones” where fish and marine life cannot survive. Microplastics, originating from consumer products, fishing gear, and industrial processes, are present throughout the water column and seabed, posing risks to marine organisms. Chemical pollutants, including heavy metals like mercury and lead, accumulate in fish and seabirds, affecting reproduction and long-term ecosystem health. Climate change, warming waters, and changing salinity further stress this delicate ecosystem, reducing biodiversity and disrupting food webs.

The production employs a variety of techniques to communicate these issues. On-location footage conveys immediacy and the physical demands of the expedition, while underwater filming, including diving, uncovers the hidden world of the Baltic. Laboratory scenes, such as microscopic analyses of microplastics and demonstrations of innovative oil-cleaning technologies, visually explain complex processes. Drone cinematography illustrates the scale of human impact and landscapes, and archival material highlights the Baltic’s historical and cultural significance. Scientists from marine biology, ecology, chemistry, and ornithology are presented not only professionally but also as individuals with personal motivations, emphasizing that science is a deeply human endeavor.

The film targets a broad audience, including general viewers, environmental communities, educators, and policymakers. It seeks to inspire young people, families, and local communities to understand how daily choices—sustainable consumption, waste reduction, and responsible lifestyles—directly affect the sea. Simultaneously, the documentary engages decision-makers through clear scientific evidence and expert testimony. Its impact aims to spark dialogue, encourage collective responsibility, and foster international collaboration for Baltic Sea protection.

The project has been in development since 2024, during Giedrius Bučas’s expedition, and will now focus on filming scientists, their research, as well as Giedrius Bučas’s ecological and practical initiatives. Editing will begin this fall, although additional filming is planned for spring 2026, with all production scheduled to be completed by mid-summer. Our goal is to create a film that truly connects with a wide audience. During the production phase of The Sea Begins Here, we will actively engage audiences through a dedicated online presence, including behind-the-scenes content, expedition updates, and short video clips shared via social media platforms and the project website. This approach will help build a community of interest even before the film is completed.

Expected outcomes extend beyond the film itself. Screenings will be accompanied by discussions, workshops, and outreach campaigns to maximize social impact. By weaving together personal stories with ecological urgency, The Sea Begins Here documents an extraordinary expedition while simultaneously inspiring reflection, responsibility, and hope. The project aims to transform awareness into action, emphasizing that the health of the Baltic Sea is inseparable from the health of humanity and that both individual and collective efforts can make a meaningful contribution to the preservation of this vital ecosystem.

The project aims to create a compelling film that connects audiences to the Baltic Sea and vividly highlights the urgent and dramatic threats of its pollution. It will show how everyday human choices impact the sea and its ecosystems, while highlighting the work of individuals and communities striving to protect it. By combining human stories with the ecological reality, the film seeks to inspire reflection, responsibility, and meaningful action. The Sea Begins Here will premiere in Baltic Sea region countries with environmental NGOs and cultural partners, and be submitted to international environmental and documentary festivals. Distribution through public television networks (e.g., LRT) and global streaming platforms will ensure long-term accessibility and engagement.
