The Buckminster Fuller Challenge, which ran from 2007–2017, recognized and supported visionary initiatives that applied whole-systems thinking to solve pressing global problems. The program annually showcased bold, comprehensive solutions that addressed interconnected social, environmental, and economic issues.
Here, we’ve selected a handful of projects from the archive exemplifying innovative approaches to ocean health, marine ecosystems, and water stewardship, all highlighting the power of design and collaboration to regenerate our blue planet.
These projects offer valuable reference points for innovative thinking that incorporate scientific knowledge to imagine and create regenerative futures, demonstrating how creative approaches, whether in science, design, or art, can support new ways of relating to and caring for our oceans.

Jellyfish Barge
A floating, modular greenhouse designed for urban and peri-urban agriculture, Jellyfish Barge produces its own fresh water and energy using solar power. This affordable, transportable solution allows for food production near cities without drawing on existing land or freshwater resources.

Smart Floating Farms
This project proposes non-polluting floating platforms to bring sustainable food production to densely populated or resource-scarce regions. Powered by clean energy, the platforms are designed for locations facing challenges such as water scarcity, lack of arable land, or climate-induced flooding.

Algae Systems
Algae Systems revolutionizes wastewater treatment with a closed-loop system that not only purifies water but also produces biofuels and fertilizers. Designed to be cost-effective and carbon-negative, the system is adaptable for both developed and developing regions, turning waste streams into valuable resources.

One People One Reef
A collaborative effort between scientists and Micronesian island communities, this project integrates traditional ecological knowledge with modern conservation science. Together, they develop sustainable fisheries management strategies that protect both cultural heritage and fragile reef ecosystems.

GreenWave
GreenWave pioneered the world’s first multi-species 3D ocean farms, which restore ocean ecosystems while creating new livelihoods. By cultivating species like kelp and shellfish, these farms help sequester carbon, improve marine biodiversity, and support coastal communities.

Algal Turf Scrubbing
This system grows a dense mat of native algae on specially designed surfaces, purifying water while producing biomass for fuel and fertilizer. It mitigates agricultural runoff, enhances coastal habitats, sequesters carbon, and contributes to reducing fossil fuel reliance.
